Founded in 1946, Fort Worth Opera is the oldest continually performing opera company in Texas, and one of the 14 oldest opera companies in the United States. Known throughout the operatic world as a champion of new and rarely-performed works, FW Opera has taken a leadership role in engaging audiences beyond the operatic stage, while producing cutting-edge, contemporary operas.
POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the President of the Fort Worth Opera Board, the General Director is responsible for the leadership and execution of all production/artistic, administrative, development, marketing, and public relations activities of Fort Worth Opera. The execution of these various activities shall be the responsibility of the General Director by achieving personally or delegating these key activities to various members of Fort Worth Opera’s staff. Will have both direct and indirect supervisory responsibilities for a total staff of approximately 15 employees.
The successful candidate along with the Board, will be responsible for initiating, developing, and maintaining community relationships with civic leaders, government officials, corporate leaders, and community volunteers across the Metroplex and will also have the responsibility for being proactive in communicating with the officers and Board members of Fort Worth Opera.
- Will be responsible for the development, rollout, and execution of Fort Worth Opera’s strategic plan from a Board and internal staff point of view and will be proactive in developing strategies around the strategic plan at the current time for implementation for at least two (2) seasons in advance of the current season.
- Will have the responsibility for the execution of all budgeting/financial matters through other staff members and/or at the direction of the Board.
- Will have the responsibility for the execution of administrative matters through other staff members.
- Will have responsibility for the execution of a marketing/public relations campaign through staff members.
- Will have ongoing responsibilities for development matters by personally making calls with Board members to corporate sponsors and potential corporate sponsors, foundations, and individuals.
- Will ensure the follow-through on all matters presented to him/her by either the Association President or Board.
- Will have the responsibility for the execution of all artistic/production matters relating to every production of Fort Worth Opera within the parameters as stipulated by the Board; the implementation of artistic/production matters will either be a direct responsibility or an indirect responsibility through other staff members.
- Will have the responsibility for the execution for all development activities through other staff members.
- Will work closely with key executives of other local and regional arts groups in order to collaborate and coordinate activities and future plans.
- Will strive to promote Fort Worth Opera as a nationally recognized opera company and a highly sought after destination for singers and opera patrons throughout the Metroplex, around the United States as well as outside the United States.
- Will work closely with all Board committees in ensuring the success of committee plans and activities.
- Will work closely with the Board and the Association President in strategic thinking and planning activities relating to Fort Worth Opera.
- Will strive to promote and develop a diverse patron base through opera-related activities and productions (i.e. Noches) ensuring that a diverse patron audience exists and desires to attend Fort Worth Opera productions and activities.
- Continue to build collaborations with TCU as well as UNT and other universities in the Metroplex.
- Build upon the Children’s Opera Theater as well as other educational programs.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of 10 years combined prior related experience in either a regionally or nationally recognized opera company with responsibilities for artistic/production, administration, development, marketing, and Board relations.
- A minimum of a 4-year accredited college degree in business and/or arts administration.
- Proven track record as an effective manager and leader.
- A personable and charismatic communicator who is able to present complex issues in straightforward and compelling ways.
- Must possess the outward and inward charm as well as intellectual capacity to motivate and retain the interest of Board members, volunteers, and community and corporate leaders.
- Strong business acumen; ability to effectively interpret financial statements and identify areas of improvement, address problems and develop forecasts.
- Ability to work effectively with subordinate staff by motivating employees to achieve performance excellence.
- Excellent written, leadership, and communication skills. Assured public presence and comfort level with business and community leaders; ability to communicate the case for support in lay terms to trustees and other stakeholders; ability to effectively make presentations to prospective donors and Board members.
- Action oriented, adaptable, and an innovative approach to business and strategic planning.
- A good listener and comfortable receiving input from various sources; creative and skilled negotiator.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
